End of Year
The year is winding down, so I thought I'd take some time to touch bases with parents. First, I would like to thank all of you for the fine job you've done with your children. This has been a really nice group of kids, and many of them have been working hard lately to try to bring up their grades. They need to complete the final study guide for tomorrow (Wed.), when I'll stamp it and review for the final. We will be taking the written final on Thursday and Friday for 100 pts. Next week, we will be completing our final lab with a rat dissection. Once again, thank you for such a wonderful group of kids. Brenda Knopp
New Semester
Welcome to second semester. The students now understand what to expect in my classroom, so there should be no new suprises. We are finishing up the unit on Protein Synthesis (how DNA actually works), and will be starting the new unit on Genetic Technology this week. On Thursday, 1/21, we will have our first test of the new semester. If they study their study guides they should do very well. On Friday, we will be completing our first Socratic Seminar on GMO's. Students should have completed research investigating both sides of the issue (both pro and con GMO's). They will need to present either side when I randomly draw their names. Welcome back to Biology and I'm hoping for a very successful semester. Mrs. knopp
11/30 - 12/14
I hope you all had a very nice Thanksgiving break. I would like to thank all the parents for the great group of kids I have this year. The vast majority are very respectful, and are very anxious to keep up their grades.
We have reached the final 2 weeks of the semester devoted to learning new topics. The final week of school (T-Th) will be to administer the final exams. This week (11/30-12/4) we will be learning about Genetics, completing the notes, completing several worksheets (not on fusion - they require scanning), and completing a lab. The following week we will start the final exam study guide, complete worksheets and labs on Genetics and take the Genetic Quiz. On Mon, 12/14, we will take the final notebook check (worth a lot of points). Please avoid absences for the next several weeks as we will be covering a lot of very important material in class. Also, please make sure your child is up-to-date on their notes as the next check will cover several units. The final exam will cover the entire semester. If your child is struggling, please have them see me during lunch for help or tutoring. Thanks, Brenda Knopp
October
We are now 6 weeks into the school year, and students should be getting used to the rigors of high school. We will be learning about the cell in class, and will have a 3D cell project due on 10/20. This can be made from shoe boxes, food containers (cookie containers), cakes, mellons, etc. Students need to made a "neat" representation of a cell, and label 12 different organelles from their notes. This will be a 100 point project, so it is important that they spend some time on this. I will NOT be providing class time for this project - so it will completely be homework. Thanks, Brenda Knopp
Upcoming Biology Events
So far this year has been wonderful. I'm really enjoying getting to know your students. We just spent the last 2 days doing research in the library for the student's upcoming ecology presentations. They need to organize their notes, come up with a 3-5 minute oral presentation, and have a visual (usually a poster). This will be due on 9/23, and is worth 100 points (will have a definite impact on their grades). If your child needs any assistance with this project or any other assignments, I'm available both lunches Mon, Wed and Thurs. We will also have a minimum day on Wed., 9/16 to prepare for back-to-school night. I look forward to meeting you. Thanks, Brenda Knopp
Welcome to Biology
Welcome to Biology. I'm looking forward to meeting with my new students. For supplies, please purchase a single-subject spiral notebook and a 3-ring binder or folder to keep worksheets and handouts. We will begin the school year by learning about safety, the scientific method, metrics and a brief chemistry review. I will be posting the tentative homework schedule each week. The notes, study guides, and most worksheets will be available on fusion. Once again, welcome back for the 2015-16 school year. Mrs. Knopp
